DSBA Member Spotlight
Dan Miller
Dan Miller is an Active Member of the DSBA and sports director at WJBK-TV, Fox-2. Since 1997, I have been the Sports Director at FOX 2. As a native of Washington, D.C., I had no idea where my career would take me, but landing in Detroit has been a blessing for me and my family. The combination of a great quality of life and the opportunity to cover a sports landscape that's second to none has been fantastic.
I knew very early that I wanted to be involved in sports on some level. My opportunity to break in came during my senior year in high school when I got a job working for Mutual Broadcasting. I was made full time during my junior year in college and stayed there for 11 years. By the time I left, I was anchoring the morning sports for hundreds of stations accross the country, but I knew there were other things I wanted to do.
I accepted a job hosting an overnight radio show for WTEM in the nation's capital. Thankfully, that only lasted for six weeks before I moved on to a number of better shifts that didn't require sleeping all day.
My opportunity to break into TV came in 1994 when I was hired by FOX 5 in D.C. to help with their Redskins coverage. That led to some fill-in ancoring and a weekend gig at the ABC affiliate in my hometown. In 1997, the call from Detroit came and the rest is history.
Football is my passion and I've had a chance to call games on two tours of duty in Europe and for five years in association with Fox's NFL coverage. In 2005, I was hired by WKRK to handle the Lions radio play-by-play duties. I can honestly say that working on Sundays with Jim Brandstatter has been one of the most gratifying experiences in my career.
When I'm not working, I'm hanging out with my family. I'm also a professional TV viewer. Mostly sports, but the remote is usually smoking pretty good when I'm in control.
I'm proud of what we do at FOX 2. I have an unbelievable staff. Jennifer Hammond, Woody Woodriffe and producers Glenn Therrien, Gregg Kanner and Ryan Ermanni are Pro Bowlers in my book. They are driven to be the best and I hope that shows every night. Simply put, our job is to keep you coming back with the best sportscast possible. I look forward to that opportunity every night at 5, 6, and 10 and Sunday night on the 'Works' at 11 p.m.
